What is Pilates?
Pilates is a form of total body conditioning that is accessible to people of all ages and levels of fitness. Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates as a means of physical fitness and total body healing. The six core principles of Pilates are concentration, control, centering, flow, precision and breathing and are integral components of each Pilates session. The principles work synergistically to heal the body, and restore a mind/body connection. Pilates exercises strengthen muscles by lengthening and toning rather than creating bulk and are performed either on mats or utilizing specialized apparatus. About Joseph H. Pilates (1883-1967):
Joseph H. Pilates was born in Germany in 1883. He was a sickly child suffering from a myriad of physical ailments which inspired him to dedicate his life to improving his physical strength. From the exercises known as Pilates were born. During World War I Pilates developed a series of mat exercises that would become the foundation of his exercises today. These exercises are intended to strengthen the core muscles of the body to increase total body balance and spinal health. Pilates studied a variety of bodywork techniques including yoga and qigong to create a series of physical exercises that improve physical health and promote healing. He’s the author of two books, “Return to Life through Contrology” and “Your Health” focusing on his movement techniques. Joseph Pilates moved to New York and opened up a Pilates studio where he taught dances, athletes and artists. Until his death in 1967, Joseph Pilates continued to teach and fulfill his dream of bringing health and healing to people.
