What is Pilates?
Pilates is a form of total body conditioning that is accessible to people of all ages and levels of fitness. Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates as a means of physical fitness and total body healing. The six core principles of Pilates are concentration, control, centering, flow, precision and breathing and are integral components of each Pilates session. The principles work synergistically to heal the body, and restore a mind/body connection. Pilates exercises strengthen muscles by lengthening and toning rather than creating bulk and are performed either on mats or utilizing specialized apparatus. At Westside Pilates your instructor will tailor the exercises specifically to your needs and physical conditions.
What will Pilates do for Me?
The beauty of Pilates is its accessibility. Anyone can use the technique of Pilates for healing from physical ailments like scoliosis, sciatica, lower back pain, nerve impingement, leg pain and chronic illness. Pilates is a great tool to achieve increased physical fitness, muscle tone, abdominal strength, better posture and total body alignment. Whether you’re 19 or 90, suffering from sciatica or looking for increased muscle tone, Pilates is a great option for health and healing.
I’m interested! How do I begin?
Excellent! We are so excited to welcome you to the studio. First, browse through our list of classes/ private packages to determine what would be best for your body. At Westside Pilates we offer Privates, Duets, and group combo classes (see our sessions page for more information). You can book a class online through MindBody. Before your first appointment, Adrianne will reach out to discuss any injuries/goals you may have, and match you to the best instructor for your needs.
What can I expect from my first session?
In your first Pilates session you can expect a basic physical assessment to examine the way you stand and move, as well as information gathering about your daily physical activity such as how long you sit each day, etc. A pilates session typically incorporates mat and reformer work but each session is tailored to the individual’s physical needs.
All cancellations must be made 24 hours prior to scheduled appointments, or you will be held responsible for full payment. Our policy is a courtesy to our instructors who have made a time commitment to our schedule and are compensated on a per-client basis.
Lateness of more than 20 minutes will be considered a no-show, and clients will be charged the full the full session fee. Instructors are not responsible for staying beyond 20 minutes if the client has not called to say they are coming.
All prepaid packages expire within 4 months of the date of purchase. No refunds will be given, but transfers of credit can be arranged at the owner’s discretion.
I’m injured. Can I still practice Pilates?
First, always consult with your physician prior to beginning a new exercise regime. However Pilates was initially developed to assist with physical rehabilitation, and many people find it useful to recovering from their injuries. Please always alert your instructor to any injuries you may have.
Can I practice Pilates while pregnant?
If you have practiced Pilates previously, then yes. If you haven’t practiced Pilates previously, it’s not recommended that you begin when pregnant. As always, it’s important to speak with your physician prior to starting a new exercise program.
What should I wear?
We recommend comfortable, loose fitting clothes that will allow you to move freely without constriction. We ask if possible to avoid buttons or zippers, as these can be damaging to the equipment. Don’t forget to bring a water bottle to class! We have fountains where you can fill them in the studio, and also have WSP reusable water bottles available for purchase.
What type of training do your instructors have?
All of our instructors have all been through extensive training certifications, and specialize in providing classical Pilates technique with a twist to design the best program for your body. We are committed to continued teacher training even after our instructors are certified, and are fortunate to have instructors that have been at the studio for years. We believe that at WSP our trainers should be compensated properly for their work and expertise, and our pricing reflects that.
Do you have changing rooms?
The studio is outfitted with two changing rooms and a bathroom. We do not offer showers, but do provide towels for use during class.
We welcome anyone 16+ to join us in the studio. If you are under 18, you must be accompanied by an adult while practicing Pilates.
