FAQ

  • WHAT IS PILATES?

Pilates is a form of total body conditioning that is accessible to people of all ages and levels of fitness. Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates as a means of physical fitness and total body healing. The six core principles of Pilates are concentration, control, centering, flow, precision and breathing and are integral components of each Pilates session. The principles work synergistically to heal the body, and restore a mind/body connection. Pilates exercises strengthen muscles by lengthening and toning rather than creating bulk and are performed either on mats or utilizing specialized apparatus. At Westside Pilates your instructor will tailor the exercises specifically to your needs and physical conditions.

  • WHAT WILL PILATES DO FOR ME?

The beauty of Pilates is its accessibility. Anyone can use the technique of Pilates for healing from physical ailments like scoliosis, sciatica, lower back pain, nerve impingement, leg pain and chronic illness. Pilates is a great tool to achieve increased physical fitness, muscle tone, abdominal strength, better posture and total body alignment. Whether you’re 19 or 90, suffering from sciatica or looking for increased muscle tone, Pilates is a great option for health and healing.

  • WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM MY FIRST SESSION?

In your first Pilates session you can expect a basic physical assessment to examine the way you stand and move, as well as information gathering about your daily physical activity such as how long you sit each day, etc. A pilates session typically incorporates mat and reformer work but each session is tailored to the individual’s physical needs.
